Gayle’s Guide is taking a break for the next two weeks so will be back on the 23rd April with more fun stuff to do. In the meantime, here are some suggestions for the next week as usual, followed by some extra stuff spanning the following two weeks for my paying subscribers to say thanks, as always, for keeping this newsletter going.

If you ever want to chip in without upgrading, here’s a wee tip jar!

🥚 Easter Outdoor Fun FRI-MON from 11.00 🆓

Saturday 4th

🔍 Edinburgh Science Festival Starts Today!

This has totally snuck up on me so I’ve not properly looked at the brochure yet but I’ll sprinkle in what I like the look of myself once I get a second…

wooden drawing machine drawing a spiral shape on paper

⚙️ Mesmerising Mechanisms 10.00-16.00 🆓
📍 Water of Leith Visitor Centre, Lanark Rd
This interactive exhibition will showcase the work of local clockmaker, Ian Graham with all sorts of wooden machines like ball runs and drawing apparatus. While you’re there, why not take advantage of the water play contraptions in the visitor centre where kids can enjoy some water play, causing floods and controlling water wheels on stainless steel models. Plus there’s a cafe and an easy access point to the water nearby for plopping stones and splashing about so don’t forget their wellies!

🎨 Art Stomps 10.30-12.00 (2-5y) 🐣🐤🆓
📍 Modern One, Belford Road
Love these sessions, just a wonderful thing to do with little ones! It’s generally outdoors so be prepared for the weather, that includes grown ups who will ultimately find themselves covered in mud, clay, gooey corn puffs, you name it! There’s some fantastic art spaces for the kids to get creative and wonderful outdoor sculptures to explore too. And did I mention it’s zero pennies? And if the weather is dry, the outdoor seating for the cafe is just idyllic (if you are patient enough to brave the queues at lunchtime).

Easter Sunday 5th

LEITHIENDA – EASTER RESURRECTION - ALL-DAYER
Kids’ Rave 13.00-14.00
Definitely not aimed at kids but still very nice for a Sunday afternoon.

Monday 6th

🎂 Happy Birthday Mam!! 🎁

She reads this whole newsletter every week! 💖

📽 Toddler Time: Tiddler 11.00 🐤
📍 Cameo Picturehouse, Tollcross

🎨 Dream, Mix, Make | Surreal art play MON-FRI 14.00-16.00 🆓
📍 Modern One
”Inspired by Surrealism | Picturing the Strange at Modern One, this imaginative, drop-in workshop invites families to create art where the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Through playful mark-making, collage, stories and creative experimentation, families will build dreamlike worlds filled with curious creatures, unexpected combinations and surprising scale.”

✨ There’s a Relaxed Morning on Tue 7th 10.30-12.00 🌻🆓

Tuesday 7th

May be an image of text that says "Wester Hailes Library Lend and Mend Hub Kids (9+) beginner Sewing Class Tuesday 7/4 10:30-1:00 Lend+ Mend This is for kids aged 9 and over who have never taken our beginner class. ✂️ Wee Filmhouse on Holiday Craft Workshops 7th/9th/14th/16th 13.00
📍 Filmhouse, Lothian Road
Just on Tue/Thursdays over the Easter break, you can stay back after a family film to enjoy some crafting. Looks like the options are Little Amélie Or The Character of Rain or Arco but check the full listings for Wee Filmhouse here.

🔎 River Dipping (5-10y) 13.30-15.30 🐔
📍 Water of Leith Visitor Centre, Lanark Rd
There’s quite a few kid’s events on actually. Check them all here.

💩 Wee, Poo, Snot! 18.00-19.30 🆓
📍 Physicians’ Gallery, Queen St
Part of the Science Festival so it’s not just cheap, gross out humour!

Wednesday 8th

🐈 Gabby’s Dollhouse Live 14.00/17.00
📍 Edinburgh Playhouse
When I saw this I said “eugh” out loud but I’m sure there will be some of you wanting to take your kids to this. Just not me. Don’t tell my kids.

Thursday 9th

🐧 RZSS Spring Explorers (P3-P7) 10.00 🐔
📍 Edinburgh Zoo
These are 3 hour education sessions running at the zoo on the 9th, 14th, 15th and 16th April. The education team at the zoo are fantastic and it’s only £22 so actually 50p cheaper than just paying for a kids’ ticket at the door.

🌳 Forage & Scavenge (5-10y) 13.30-15.30 🐔
📍 Water of Leith Visitor Centre, Lanark Rd
”
Learn how woodlands can provide both a fun day out and a delicious snack.”

🦖 Dino-mite Easter Event 9th-12th April 14.00 (Thu-Sat) / 15.00 (Sun)
📍 Dobbies, Lasswade
I am of an age where I do genuinely enjoy a wee trip to Dobbies but here’s a good excuse if you need to blame the kids for going to hang out at a garden center. They can expect: “hands-on dino egg terrarium craft, dinosaur car racing fun and kid-friendly dino-themed food and treats.”

I’m taking the next two weeks off newslettering but still had plenty of links in draft between now and then so here’s a wee bonus for my paid subs!

✨ Catch the rest of ye on the 23rd! ✨
